Biking is a great mode of transportation and excercise!

Bicycles are an excellent mode of transportation for adults commuting to work, and for children in their travel to schools, playgrounds, and in their daily activities. The value of the bicycle in serving these needs has been frequently forgotten or ignored in this country. However the bicycle may still be the cheapest, and sometimes the fastest form of transportation. Studies and experience have demonstrated that when the travel times of bicycles and automobiles are compared under typical conditions, the bicycle is directly competitive with the automobile for distances of one to four miles or travel times of under 15 minutes.

The average speed of automobile traffic in congested areas is about 13 miles per hour, while the average speed of a bicycle rider is between 10 and 13 miles per hour. In the Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Region about 42% of all commuter trips are 4 miles or less, or 15 minutes or less. Considering this, and the time necessary for automobile parking and walking from the parking area to the point of destination, it is clear that the bicycle favorably competes with the automobile. Such a favorable travel time comparison has been experienced by bikers who commute regularly in the region.
