What impact are cars having on the Upper Valley environment?
Every time a person sits behind the steering wheel of a car and turns the key air pollution is produced. An average
size car traveling an average 15,000 mile each year spews a total of 193 pounds of pollution into the air. This
consists of: nitrogen oxides which damage lung tissue; carbon monoxide which limits the blood's ability to transport
oxygen causing dizziness, impaired coordination and death; and hydrocarbons the major component of smog, which
irritates the respiratory tract and eyes, and decreases lung function causing coughing and pain.
This pollution also settles out onto our land and in our water. Gardening soils have been tested and found to contain
lead which can be taken up by plants. Lakes and rivers are impacted by acid rain causing a loss of biological diversity in these ecosystems.
