Contact potential carpool partners.

We provide the most recent phone and e-mail contact information that we have. Use this information to contact potential carpool partners to ask if they are still commuting to the same place, at the same time and days, and if they are currently in a carpool.

Talk about the number of passengers each car can comfortably carry and how many you want to have in the carpool.

Discuss a daily route and an alternate plan in case of sickness. Discuss pick-up times and meeting places (such as Park and Ride lots.)  Arrange a meeting with the people who will be in the carpool before you start.

Every carpool's driver/passenger arrangement is unique. Some people alternate driving every week. Some would rather ride than drive, so you'll want to agree upon a reimbursement plan for gas and parking before you start. Talk about how often reimbursements will be made, whether it will be a flat sum or based on mileage paid on a weekly or monthly basis. Discuss these things before you start carpooling to save time and potential awkwardness later.

Smoking or Non-Smoking? Decide right away whether your carpool will be a smoking or a non-smoking vehicle. Some people's allergies to smoke are so bad that they really need to know up-front. There are very few smokers registered in the UVRS program but don't hesitate to ask.

Be on time. Nothing discourages a carpool faster than one member being late frequently. Talk about ways to deal with this if it happens on a regular basis.

Even a well-established carpool needs to set some carpool-etiquette guidelines.

Unsuccessful carpools usually disintegrate due to behavior that is considered inconsiderate

or inconvenient for its members.
